To answer your question regarding Hawking, he is definitly the world's most famous and arguably the most brillant(sp?) physicist alive today.
He is also a super genius. But unfortunately he is more or less "locked in" due to ALS. He is confined to a motorised wheelchair and speaks using a computer because he lost his ability to speak quite a few years ago from a surgical complication.
